Early intervention in health emergencies by a team of competent professionals equipped with the right tools is a key factor in reducing morbidity and mortality in these processes, especially in those included in the so-called activation codes. Prehospital emergency teams operate precisely within this early window, making their actions highly decisive. Increasingly, more professionals are interested in this field of work, which has grown in recent years in both structure and activity, and which society recognizes and values.
The competence of these professionals depends on their knowledge, attitudes, and skills, many of which are specific to this field. Currently, there is no recognized specialty in emergencies, either for medical or nursing professionals, that allows for the acquisition of such competence. In the case of emergencies, professionals must master the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of pathologies, with different levels of severity and in patients of all ages, while also ensuring comprehensive care until the patient is transferred, if necessary, to the next level of care, always in close coordination with control centers. This work takes place in complex environments, very different from the usual hospital setting. Added to this is the challenge of working in or with land or air transport. Quite often, coordinated work with other non-health entities involved in emergency response is also required. All these factors create a specific need for training that provides not only theoretical knowledge but also, preferably, practical knowledge applied in real or as close to real as possible environments.
The Master’s Degree in Out-of-Hospital Emergencies addresses this need from a fully professionalizing perspective, using a highly practical and applied methodology.
Organized jointly with the Center for Innovation in Simulation (CISARC) at the Manresa campus of UVic-UCC, the program includes a range of practical activities, simulations, and drills that highlight its professionalizing approach.
