Who is Àngels Freixanet?
Àngels Freixanet began her career as a visual artist with exhibitions of paintings rooted in French-style expressionism. After her first trip to New York, she came into contact with informalist art, large architectural spaces, and the freedom of the avant-garde. It was there that she felt drawn to iron as a material and made a definitive shift toward sculpture.
In 1974, she held her first sculpture exhibition at Sala Gaudí in Barcelona. Since then, she has presented nearly fifty solo exhibitions in Spanish and European cities such as Madrid, Bilbao, Málaga, Lleida, Paris, Milan, Geneva, Aix-en-Provence, and eight more in Barcelona, among others. She has also participated in group exhibitions in Paris, Geneva, Stuttgart, New York, Narbonne, Madrid, and Barcelona.
From 1990 onward, her work began to incorporate color and other natural materials alongside iron. She has exhibited individually at Casa Elizalde in Barcelona, the Instituto Cervantes in Milan, Urban Gallery in Zaragoza, the Solsonès County Council, the Bages/Berguedà Delegation of the Architects’ Association of Catalonia, Sala Blanquerna in Madrid, and the Provincial Palace of the Jaén Council. From April to September 2005, as part of the Year of the Book, she presented six large-format book sculptures in the gardens of Palau Robert in Barcelona. In 2006–2007, her works were displayed in Terminal A of El Prat Airport. In 2011, she presented “A Journey Through the Art of Àngels Freixanet,” a retrospective exhibition covering her entire career at the El Casino Cultural Centre, the County Library, and the Kursaal Theatre in Manresa. Her most recent solo exhibitions have been held at Mas de Sant Iscle (Sant Fruitós de Bages), the Joviat Foundation, and Heretat Oller del Mas (Manresa).
Her work can be found in several museums across Spain, as well as in Paris — at Orly Airport — and in Porto. Àngels Freixanet has also received numerous cultural and scientific awards at both national and international levels.
