Programme Description

The growing importance of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool in everyday clinical practice, especially in Obstetrics and Gynaecology — including the areas of Reproduction, Mastology, Oncology, Deep Endometriosis and the Pelvic Floor — highlights the need to properly train specialists in ultrasound or sonographers.

The training of these professionals must be highly practical, conducted in a real clinical environment and supervised by expert medical staff who guide the learning process. Qualification

Master’s Degree in Gynaecological, Obstetric and Breast Ultrasound awarded by the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia.

If the student does not hold a university degree, they will receive a University Specialisation Certificate in Gynaecological, Obstetric and Breast Ultrasound issued by the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia.

This level of training qualifies the holder to carry out routine first- and third-trimester obstetric ultrasound examinations, including assessment of fetal position, biometrics, placental location, amniotic fluid, fetal vitality and biophysical profile.

It does not enable the holder to perform second-trimester abnormality scans or invasive techniques guided by ultrasonography.

In gynaecology, it enables the performance of vaginal and abdominal scans. If uterine or adnexal pathology is detected, the professional can make a correct diagnosis under medical supervision but cannot perform invasive techniques.

In breast ultrasound, it enables the detection of benign and malignant pathology under medical supervision but not the performance of invasive procedures (FNA).

Gynaecological Ultrasound

1. Basic Concepts

2D ultrasound: basic concepts and handling tips.
Doppler ultrasound: basic concepts and handling tips (pulsed and colour Doppler, arterial and venous flows, qualitative and quantitative measurement techniques, interpretation errors).
3D/4D ultrasound: basic concepts (multiplanar mode, TUI, surface rendering, Sono AVC), pre‑ and post‑acquisition adjustments, offline analysis.

2. Gynaecological Ultrasound: Ovary and Adnexa

IOTA Protocol.
Ovarian function and related disorders.
Benign organic ovarian pathology.
Ultrasound assessment of suspicious adnexal masses.
Endometrioma and deep endometriosis: ultrasound diagnosis.
Diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome.
Unilocular cysts and solid tumours in menopause.
Ultrasound findings of ovarian torsion.
Diagnosis of adnexal pathology: hydrosalpinx, abscesses, adnexitis.
Diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy.

6. First‑trimester Ultrasound

Normal aspects of early pregnancy: gestational sac, yolk sac, number of embryos, chorionicity and amnionicity.
Embryo‑fetal biometry: crown‑rump length (CRL). Gestational age estimation.
Determination of fetal viability. Embryonic heart rate measurement.
Assessment of uterus and adnexa.
Diagnosis of abnormal early pregnancy, including hydatidiform mole.
Development of fetal anatomy in early pregnancy, including detection of anomalies: nuchal translucency, cystic hygroma, fetal hydrops, etc.
Basics of cervical measurement in relation to preterm birth risk.

7. Early Second‑trimester Ultrasound

Anatomical fetal assessment.
Assessment of amniotic fluid and placenta.

Markers of chromosomal anomalies: Nuchal Translucency, Ductus Venosus, Nasal Bone.
Assessment of uterine artery blood flow.

8. Second‑trimester Anatomy Scan

Assessment of fetal skull, profile, brain, spine, heart, lungs, abdomen, fetal sex, limbs, placenta, amniotic fluid, cord insertion, cervical length.

9. Common Fetal and Adnexal Abnormalities

Structural: skeletal, central nervous system, cardiac, thoracic, urogenital, abdominal wall, diaphragm, gastrointestinal. Ultrasound markers.
Functional: polyhydramnios, oligohydramnios, hydrops, arrhythmias.
Placental and cord pathology.

10. Fetal Growth Assessment: Biometry

Gestational age and growth estimation.
Interpretation and limitations of ultrasound in age estimation.
Interpretation and limitations of ultrasound in growth assessment. Fetal growth monitoring.
Fetal measurements: biparietal diameter, head and abdominal circumference, femur length. Estimated Fetal Weight.
Growth disorders: SGA and FGR.

11. Biophysical Tests: Interpretation and Limitations

Fetal tone, fetal movements, fetal breathing, cardio‑respiratory rate.

12. Invasive Techniques

Knowledge of diagnostic procedures (amniocentesis, chorionic biopsy, cordocentesis, etc.) and therapeutic procedures (drainages, hernia corrections, twin‑to‑twin transfusion correction, etc.).

13. Fetal and Uteroplacental Haemodynamic Assessment

Knowledge of fetal and uteroplacental haemodynamics. Analysis and interpretation of blood flow in uterine and fetal vessels. Fetal haemodynamic profile.
Prediction of placental pathology: pre‑eclampsia and growth restriction. Clinical applications and limitations.

Practicum

14. Applied Knowledge — Clinical Practice (300 hours)

Clinical placements. Comprehensive patient care.
Supervised ultrasound practice and image interpretation:
- 180 hours in the gynaecological ultrasound unit
- 60 hours in the breast ultrasound unit
- 60 hours in the obstetric ultrasound unit

Live online synchronous session: November–December 2026 (date to be confirmed).
On-site clinical placements (300 hours): Monday to Friday (morning shift 8 am–2 pm, or afternoon shift 2 pm–8 pm) between October 2025 and June 2026. Saturday placements may be possible.
Online asynchronous theoretical content (virtual classroom): from 5 October 2026 to 25 April 2027.
