Early intervention in health emergencies by a team of competent professionals with the appropriate tools is a key factor in reducing morbidity and mortality in these processes, especially those included in the so-called activation codes. Prehospital emergency teams operate precisely within this critical window, making their actions highly decisive. Increasingly, more professionals are interested in this field, which has grown in recent years in both structures and activity, and which society recognizes and values.
The competence of these professionals depends on their knowledge, attitudes, and skills, many of which are specific to this field. At present, there is no recognized specialty in emergencies, either for medical or nursing professionals, that allows for the acquisition of this competence. In emergencies, professionals must master the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of pathologies, with varying levels of severity and in patients of all ages, while also ensuring comprehensive care until the patient is transferred, if necessary, to the next level of care, always in collaboration with coordination centers. This work is carried out in complex environments, very different from those of the hospital setting. Added to this is the additional factor of working in or with land or air transport. Quite often, coordinated work with other non-healthcare entities involved in emergency response from all perspectives is also required. All these factors create a specific need for training that provides not only theoretical knowledge but also, preferably, highly practical skills applied in real or as close as possible to real environments.
The Master’s Degree in Out-of-Hospital Emergencies responds to this need from a fully professionalizing perspective, using a highly practical and applied methodology.
Organized in collaboration with the Center for Innovation in Simulation (CISARC) at the Manresa campus of UVic-UCC, the program develops a set of practical activities, simulations, and drills that highlight its professionalizing nature.
