Cancer is a disease of growing prevalence. Despite the increase in cure rates, it continues to have a strong psychological impact on patients and their families. Historically, the lack of resources to alleviate adverse symptoms and the fact that many patients did not survive shaped society’s perception of cancer. Today, despite medical advances, the process of diagnosis, treatment, and adaptation to the disease creates significant psychological challenges.
Psycho-oncology is the branch of psychology that studies and provides support to both cancer patients and their families. Every medical advance brings new emotional and psychological challenges that require specialized intervention. For this reason, psychologists who wish to work in this field must understand the specific characteristics of the disease and its psychological and social effects.
This postgraduate diploma provides the training needed for professionals interested in developing their careers in healthcare centers, patient associations, and social and healthcare environments.
