Master in Gynecological, Obstetric and Breast Ultrasound

Target audience

Graduates in Nursing, Specialist Technician in Radiodiagnosis (TER), and Higher Technician in Diagnostic Imaging (TSID).

Theoretical content is delivered online asynchronously (virtual classroom).

There is one synchronous (live) online session.

Timetable

• Introductory face-to-face session: October 7, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dexeus Dona Auditorium in Barcelona.

• Synchronous (live) online session: November 18, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

• On-site clinical training (300 hours): Monday to Friday (morning shift, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; or afternoon shift, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.), between October 2025 and June 2026. Option to do clinical training on Saturdays.

Degree

Master’s in Gynecological, Obstetric and Breast Ultrasound awarded by the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia.

If the student does not hold a university degree, a University Specialization Certificate in Gynecological, Obstetric and Breast Ultrasound will be awarded by the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia.

This level of certification qualifies for routine first- and third-trimester obstetric ultrasound scans to assess fetal position, biometry, placental location, amniotic fluid volume, fetal vitality, and biophysical profile.

It does not qualify certified professionals to perform second-trimester ultrasounds aimed at detecting fetal malformations, nor invasive ultrasound-guided techniques.

From a gynecological perspective, it qualifies for vaginal and abdominal ultrasounds. If uterine or adnexal pathology is detected, it qualifies for making a correct diagnosis, always under medical supervision, but not for performing invasive techniques.

In breast ultrasound, it allows detection of benign and malignant pathology under medical supervision but not for performing invasive tests (FNA).

€5,100 (Payment in three installments: 20% upon enrollment; 40% in October; and 40% in January).

This training may be eligible for company funding through the State Foundation for Employment Training, depending on available credit. Alternatively, if the training is carried out during working hours, the company may recover the salary costs of the hours the employee invests in their training as an Individual Training Leave (PIF).

Gynecological ultrasound

1. Basic concepts

• 2D ultrasound. Basic concepts and handling tips.
• Doppler ultrasound. Basic concepts and handling tips (pulsed and color Doppler, arterial and venous flows, qualitative and quantitative measurement techniques, interpretation errors).
• 3D/4D ultrasound. Basic concepts (description of modes – multiplanar, TUI, surface rendering, Sono AVC), pre- and post-acquisition adjustments, offline analysis.

2. Gynecological ultrasound: Ovary and adnexa

• IOTA protocol.
• Ovarian function and its disorders.
• Benign organic ovarian pathology.
• Ultrasound evaluation of suspicious adnexal masses.
• Endometrioma and deep endometriosis. Ultrasound diagnosis.
• Ultrasound diagnosis of polycystic ovary.
• Unilocular cysts and solid tumors in menopause.
• Ultrasound findings of ovarian torsion.
• Ultrasound diagnosis of adnexal pathology: hydrosalpinx, abscesses, adnexitis.

3. Gynecological ultrasound: Uterus and endometrium

5. Breast ultrasound

• Equipment and calibration of the ultrasound scanner for proper breast evaluation.
• Indications for breast ultrasound. Examination technique. Normal breast anatomy.

• Ultrasound diagnosis of breast cancer.
• Ultrasound study of the axilla.

Obstetric ultrasound

6. First trimester ultrasound

• Normal aspects of early pregnancy: gestational sac, yolk sac, number of embryos, as well as chorionicity and amnionicity.
• Embryo-fetal biometry: crown-rump length (CRL). Estimation of gestational age.
• Determination of fetal viability. Measurement of embryonic heart rate.
• Study of the uterus and adnexa.
• Diagnosis of abnormal early pregnancy, including hydatidiform mole.
• Development of fetal anatomy in early pregnancy including detection of anomalies: nuchal translucency, cystic hygroma and fetal hydrops, etc.
• Basics of cervical length measurement in relation to preterm labor risk.

7. Early second trimester ultrasound

• Fetal anatomical evaluation.
• Evaluation of amniotic fluid and placenta.
• Placental location.
• Evaluation of the number of umbilical cord vessels.
• Evaluation of chromosomal markers: Nuchal Translucency, Ductus Venosus and Nasal Bone.
• Evaluation of uterine artery blood flow.

8. Second trimester ultrasound. Fetal anatomy evaluation

• Evaluation of fetal skull, fetal profile, fetal brain, spine, heart, lungs, abdomen, fetal sex, extremities, placenta and amniotic fluid, cord insertion at fetal and placental levels, uterine cervical length.

9. Most common fetal and adnexal anomalies

• Structural: skeletal, central nervous system, cardiovascular, thoracic, urogenital, abdominal wall and diaphragm, gastrointestinal. Ultrasound markers of anomalies.
• Functional: polyhydramnios, oligohydramnios, hydrops, arrhythmias.
• Placental and cord pathology.

10. Fetal growth assessment: Fetal biometry

• Estimation of gestational age and fetal growth.
• Interpretation and assessment of ultrasound limitations in estimating fetal age.
• Interpretation and assessment of ultrasound limitations in estimating fetal growth. Monitoring fetal growth.
• Fetal measurements. Developmental assessment: biparietal diameter, head and abdominal circumference, femur length. Estimated Fetal Weight assessment.
• Assessment of growth pathology: SGA and IUGR.

11. Biophysical tests: Interpretation. Limitations

• Fetal tone, fetal movements, fetal breathing. Cardiorespiratory rhythm.

12. Invasive techniques

• Knowledge of diagnostic procedures (*amniocentesis, chorionic biopsy, cordocentesis, etc.) and therapeutic procedures (drainages, hernia repair, twin-to-twin transfusion correction, etc.).

13. Fetal and uteroplacental hemodynamic evaluation

• Knowledge of fetal and uteroplacental hemodynamics. Analysis and interpretation of blood flow in uterine and fetal vessels. Fetal hemodynamic profile.
• Prediction of placental pathology: preeclampsia and growth restriction. Clinical applications and limitations.
