Program Description

The progressive integration of ultrasound as a key diagnostic tool in clinical practice — especially in obstetrics and gynecology, with applications in reproduction, breast care, oncology, deep endometriosis and the pelvic floor — highlights the need to properly train the specialist role of the sonographer.

This master’s degree responds to this reality with a training model focused on intensive clinical practice, carried out in real healthcare settings and under the supervision of expert medical professionals. Its objective is to train ultrasound specialists with solid technical skills, clinical judgement and professional autonomy, contributing to the recognition and consolidation of the sonographer profile within healthcare teams.

Qualification

Master’s Degree in Gynaecological, Obstetric and Breast Ultrasound awarded by the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia.

If the student does not hold a university degree, they will receive a University Specialisation Certificate in Gynaecological, Obstetric and Breast Ultrasound issued by the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia.

Professional Scope and Considerations

This level of training qualifies professionals to:

Obstetrics: perform routine first- and third-trimester ultrasounds to assess fetal position, biometry, placental location, amniotic fluid volume, fetal vitality and biophysical profile.
Gynecology: carry out transvaginal and abdominal ultrasounds and, in case of detecting uterine or adnexal pathology, provide diagnostic orientation under medical supervision.
Breast ultrasound: identify benign and malignant pathology under medical supervision.

This qualification does not authorize the performance of second-trimester obstetric ultrasound aimed at detecting fetal malformations, nor the practice of ultrasound-guided invasive techniques (including FNAC), which require additional specific accreditation.

Gynecological Ultrasound

1. Basic Concepts

2D Ultrasound: basic concepts and handling tips.
Doppler Ultrasound: basic concepts and handling tips (power and color Doppler, arterial and venous flows, qualitative and quantitative measurement techniques, interpretation errors).
3D/4D Ultrasound: basic concepts (description of modes — multiplanar mode, TUI, surface rendering, Sono AVC), pre- and post-acquisition settings, offline analysis.

2. Gynecological Ultrasound: Ovary and Adnexa

IOTA Protocol.
Ovarian function and related disorders.
Benign organic ovarian pathology.
Ultrasound assessment of suspicious adnexal masses.
Endometrioma and deep endometriosis: ultrasound diagnosis.
Ultrasound diagnosis of polycystic ovary.
Unilocular cysts and solid tumors in menopause.
Ultrasound findings in ovarian torsion.
Ultrasound diagnosis of adnexal pathology: hydrosalpinx, abscesses and adnexitis.
Diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy.

3. Gynecological Ultrasound: Uterus and Endometrium

Equipment and calibration of the ultrasound system for correct breast assessment.

Obstetric Ultrasound

6. First-Trimester Ultrasound

Normal aspects of early pregnancy: gestational sac, yolk sac and number of embryos, as well as chorionicity and amnionicity.
Embryo–fetal biometry: crown–rump length (CRL). Estimation of gestational age.
Determination of fetal viability. Measurement of embryonic heart rate.
Assessment of uterus and adnexa.
Diagnosis of abnormal early pregnancy, including hydatidiform mole.
Development of fetal anatomy in early pregnancy, including anomaly detection: nuchal translucency, cystic hygroma, fetal hydrops, etc.
Principles of cervical measurement in relation to preterm birth risk.

7. Early Second-Trimester Ultrasound

Fetal anatomical assessment.
Assessment of amniotic fluid and placenta.
Placental location.
Assessment of umbilical cord vessel number.
Assessment of aneuploidy markers: nuchal translucency, ductus venosus and nasal bone.
Assessment of blood flow in the uterine arteries.

8. Second-Trimester Ultrasound: Fetal Anatomy

Assessment of fetal skull, profile, brain, spine, heart, lungs, abdomen, fetal sex, limbs, placenta, amniotic fluid, umbilical cord insertion (fetal and placental sides), and cervical length.

9. Common Fetal and Adnexal Anomalies

Structural: skeletal, central nervous system, cardiovascular, thoracic, urogenital, abdominal wall and diaphragm, gastrointestinal.
Functional: polyhydramnios, oligohydramnios, hydrops, arrhythmias.
Placental and umbilical cord pathology.

10. Fetal Growth Assessment: Fetal Biometry

Estimation of gestational age and fetal growth.
Interpretation and limitations of ultrasound in fetal age estimation.
Interpretation and limitations of ultrasound in fetal growth assessment. Monitoring of fetal growth.
Fetal measurements: biparietal diameter, head and abdominal circumference, femur length. Estimated Fetal Weight (EFW).
Assessment of growth pathology: SGA and FGR.

11. Biophysical Tests: Interpretation and Limitations

Fetal tone, movements and breathing. Cardiorespiratory rhythm.

12. Invasive Techniques

Knowledge of diagnostic procedures (amniocentesis, chorionic biopsy, cordocentesis, etc.) and therapeutic procedures (drainage, hernia correction, twin-to-twin transfusion treatment, etc.).

13. Fetal and Uteroplacental Hemodynamic Evaluation

Understanding fetal and uteroplacental hemodynamics. Analysis and interpretation of blood flow in uterine and fetal vessels. Fetal hemodynamic profile.
Prediction of placental pathology: preeclampsia and growth restriction. Clinical applications and limitations.

14. Applied Knowledge. Clinical Practicum (300 hours)

Clinical practice. Comprehensive patient care.
Supervised practice in ultrasound performance and interpretation:
- 180 hours in a gynecological ultrasound unit
- 60 hours in a breast ultrasound unit
- 60 hours in an obstetric ultrasound unit

15. Master’s Final Project

On‑site clinical placements (300 hours): Monday to Friday (morning shift 8 am–2 pm or afternoon shift 2 pm–8 pm), between October 2025 and June 2026. There is an option to do placements on Saturdays.

This structure allows students to balance training with clinical practice.
