Senology is a branch of medicine dedicated to the comprehensive and integrative study of the normal and pathological breast, with a humanistic approach. Senology, and particularly breast pathology, has evolved over the years by incorporating new knowledge and professional specialties to carry out the diagnostic and therapeutic process of the patient and their environment, both in normal and pathological breast conditions. To ensure a comprehensive approach, Breast Pathology Units (BPUs) have been created, made up of multidisciplinary teams. Nursing has been actively incorporated into these units, acting as a reference point and link between the various professionals involved. Due to their position within the organizational structure of hospitals, nurses play the role of case managers throughout the diagnostic and therapeutic process, creating the need to acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills specialized in senology and breast pathology.
Nurse training in senology care, and particularly in breast cancer, has become a mandatory and common practice in European countries.
