UManresa has promoted the creation of the Chair of Values-Based Leadership at the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia with the aim of creating conditions for individuals, teams, and organizations to use leadership to drive positive change in their environment. This project is complemented by this leadership course, which allows participants to deepen their understanding of these values and their practical application. It is directed by Pep Guardiola and Manel Estiarte and supported by a large number of leading figures from the academic, social, and economic fields.
The Chair has developed its conceptual framework based on the professional and personal trajectories of its two directors. On a football pitch, twelve pairs of activators (values) are connected with four dimensions (individual, team, organization, and environment), which together form the building blocks of a proprietary theoretical model that explains and defines different styles of values-based leadership.
The Chair of Values-Based Leadership was created to generate, disseminate, and transfer knowledge about values-based leadership and to promote professional environments of ethical practice in relation to people, the economy, and the environment. From this idea, it has developed a theoretical framework that reflects the life paths of its directors, Pep Guardiola and Manel Estiarte, and the values of the Fundació Universitària del Bages, the driving institution. This framework is taught in depth in this leadership course, enabling participants to effectively integrate these values into their professional environment.
Values such as exemplarity, honesty, discipline, commitment, generosity, boldness, innovation, excellence, and gratitude are organized in this model on an imaginary football pitch in the form of a line-up. Each represents a seed of ethical leadership that translates into behaviors, attitudes, and experiences, bringing abstract principles into concrete practice.
The 4-3-3 line-up is completed with a 1, the goalkeeper, and another 1, the twelfth player, the audience. Read horizontally, this formation leads to a model with four dimensions that allow reflection both organizationally and personally. From an organizational perspective, leadership is structured from the self to the environment, through the team and the organization. From a personal perspective, it invites us to think about what one feels, says, thinks, or does, the relationships established with others, and ultimately to question why one does what one does. The positioning of the values on the pitch also facilitates the identification of different intelligences linked to leadership: intrapersonal, emotional, interpersonal, and spiritual/existential, all of which are explored in depth during this leadership course.
